A Plan You Can Actually Run

Business and marketing coaching from people who have been in the room. We have run marketing for restaurants, hotels, churches, real estate teams and more since 2018, and we have seen what works, what stalls, and why. One session, a written plan, or a part-time marketing lead.

We Have Sat In That Meeting

Most coaching is theory. Ours comes from years of doing the work: sitting in the brainstorms, building the campaigns, and being there three months later when the numbers came in. That is what you are paying for when you sit down with us.

Years in the room, across a lot of industries

Between the two of us we have done marketing for about 30 businesses: restaurants and hotels, a dental practice, a fitness studio and barbershops, churches and nonprofits, real estate teams, a country club, a minor league ballclub. We have been in the planning sessions as the outside agency, as the in-house marketer, and as the person the owner calls when it is not working.

That range matters to you. The fix for a slow season at a restaurant is often something we watched work for a church or a gym. A good idea in one industry is usually brand new in the next one over, and we can carry it across.

We have watched good goals get missed

We have seen plenty of goals set in January and forgotten by March. It is rarely because the owner did not care. The goal had no number on it. Nobody owned it. There was no date. Or the plan was fine and the week got busy, every week, until the quarter was gone.

So we coach the unglamorous part. One outcome for the quarter, a number you can check, a name next to every step, and a short list of what you are going to stop doing to make room. A plan you can run on a busy Tuesday beats a beautiful one that lives in a folder.

Tunnel vision is the most expensive thing we see

Every owner has an idea they love. A new location, a billboard, an app, a rebrand, a big event. Sometimes it is exactly right. Sometimes it has been the only idea on the table for so long that nobody has asked whether customers want it, and the money and months go in before anyone finds out.

You are too close to your own business to see that clearly. Everyone is. Our job is to be the people who are not: to ask what the idea is supposed to fix, what it will cost if it does not, and whether there is a smaller way to test it first. We will tell you when the idea is good. We will also tell you when it is not, kindly, before you spend.

What you actually get from us

Straight answers from people who do this every day. Which channels are worth your money and which are not for a business your size. What a fair price is for the ad agency, the website or the hire you are considering. What your competitors are doing that you can see, and what they are doing that you cannot. Where your leads really come from, as opposed to where you assume they do.

And we do not coach you into buying from us. Plenty of sessions end with us telling an owner to keep doing what they are doing, or to fix one thing themselves this week. If you want us to carry out the plan afterward, we can. If you would rather run it with your own team, the plan is yours.

The questions we get

What experience do your coaches have?add

Surf's Up Social is Leah Hunsucker and Ruben Ochoa. Between us we have done marketing for about 30 businesses since 2018, across restaurants, hotels, healthcare, fitness, churches, nonprofits, real estate and sports. You work with the two of us directly, not a junior account manager.

How is this different from hiring a marketing agency?add

An agency does the work for you. Coaching helps you decide what work is worth doing, who should do it, and what it should cost. Many owners use a session before hiring anyone, so they know what to ask for and can tell a fair quote from a padded one.

What is small business marketing coaching?add

It is time with someone who does marketing for local businesses, focused on your business. We look at what you are doing, tell you what is working and what is not, and leave you with a written list of what to do next. You can do the work yourself or hand it to anyone.

How much does a marketing strategy session cost?add

A strategy session starts at $500. That includes our review of your website, social and ads beforehand, 90 to 120 minutes together, and a written action list afterward. If you sign up for a monthly plan with us, the session fee is credited toward it.

What do I get in a marketing plan?add

A written plan starting at $3,000: an audit of what you do now, who your customers are and how to talk to them, which channels to use and which to skip, a 90-day calendar, a budget, and the numbers to watch. It is yours to run with any team.

What is a fractional marketing lead?add

A marketing director for about a day a week, from $4,000 a month. They own the strategy, manage your staff and vendors, meet with you weekly, and keep a dashboard of results. It suits a business that needs leadership but not a full-time hire.

Is this financial or legal advice?add

No. We coach on marketing, sales process and how to run the growth side of a small business. For tax, legal, or investment questions you need a licensed professional, and we will say so when a question crosses that line.
